Simultaneous Bayesian Estimation of Non‐Planar Fault Geometry and Spatially‐Variable Slip

چکیده

Large earthquakes are usually modeled with simple planar fault surfaces or a combination of several segments. However, in general, occur on faults that non-planar and exhibit significant geometrical variations both the along-strike down-dip directions at all spatial scales. Mapping surface ruptures high-resolution geodetic observations increasingly revealing complex geometries near accurate locations aftershocks often indicate complexities depth. With better data ruptures, more details can be estimated resulting realistic models large earthquakes. To address this topic, we here parametrize set polynomial parameters allow for geometry. Our methodology uses Bayesian inference to estimate from data, yielding an ensemble plausible characterize uncertainties geometry slip. The method is demonstrated using synthetic tests considering slip spatially distributed single continuous finite varying dip strike angles directions. results show fault-slip estimations biased when assumed presence variations. help model earthquake sources way may extended include multiple segments other complexities.

Nonplanar Faults: Mechanics of Slip and Off-fault Damage

Stress interactions and sliding characteristics of faults with random fractal waviness in a purely elastic medium differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from those of faults with planar surfaces. With nonplanar fault models, solutions for slip diverge as resolution of the fractal features increases, and the scaling of fault slip with fault rupture dimension becomes nonlinear. We show that...

Multicycle dynamics of nonplanar strike-slip faults

[1] We perform two-dimensional dynamic models of strike-slip faults with a change in strike (a bend) over multiple earthquake cycles to examine the long-term effects of nonplanar fault geometry. A viscoelastic model (a proxy for off-fault deformation and tectonic loading) is introduced for the interseismic process to avoid pathological stress buildup around the bend. A finite element method wit...

Bayesian Epipolar Geometry Estimation from Tomographic Projections

In this paper, we first show that the affine epipolar geometry can be estimated by identifying the common 1D projection from a pair of tomographic parallel projection images and the 1D affine transform between the common 1D projections. To our knowledge, the link between the common 1D projections and the affine epipolar geometry has been unknown previously; and in contrast to the traditional me...

Simultaneous linear estimation of multiple view geometry and lens distortion

A bugbear of uncalibrated stereo reconstruction is that cameras which deviate from the pinhole model have to be pre-calibrated in order to correct for nonlinear lens distortion. If they are not, and point correspondence is attempted using the uncorrected images, the matching constraints provided by the fundamental matrix must be set so loose that point matching is significantly hampered. This p...
